Collection: Native Trees & Shrubs

Prairie Hardy Nursery's growing collection of native trees and shrubs focuses on hardy species native to the Canadian Prairies and the surrounding prairie-forest regions. These are plants that have evolved alongside our climate, soils, wildlife and seasonal conditions, making them valuable additions to prairie gardens, food forests, shelterbelts and naturalized landscapes.

Native species can provide much more than habitat. Many offer edible fruit, nuts, berries, flowers, shelter and seasonal interest, while contributing to a diverse and resilient planting. Species such as sand cherry, Canada plum, American plum, highbush cranberry and hackberry can be useful additions to a backyard or food forest, while also supporting the broader ecosystem around them.

We particularly enjoy seeking out hardy, useful and underappreciated native species that deserve a place in Canadian gardens.
